Let’s Go Nuts: Tips for Healthy Eating

Tree nuts are an amazing addition to your daily diet. They’re little, but mighty; each nut is jam-packed with nutrients, healthy fats, protein and fiber to keep you full and focused throughout the day. They’re little superheroes, especially pecans (our favorite tree nut, of course). But even a good thing can turn into a bad thing. To get the most health benefits from your nuts, check out these quick tips for healthy living.

Skip the Extras

You don’t need any extras when it comes to enjoying your choice of nut. Often times, those extras zap the nutrients from the nuts, or load them with extras that cancel out all the good stuff in nuts. When selecting a nut to snack on, skip nuts roasted or packaged in oil. Also, skip the heavily salted nuts, too. Opt for dry roasted or raw nuts, that way you’re getting the most nutrition from your nuts.

Pair with Carbs

Want to get the most from your nuts? Pair them with carbs! Pairing your nuts with carbs actually helps slow down digestion and the breakdown of sugars, meaning you feel full and energized for longer after eating. So grab a fruit, juice, salad or yogurt and go nuts.

Heart Healthy

We could go on and on about how good nuts, especially pecans, are for your heart. Pecan nuts contain monounsaturated fats, such as oleic acid, along with phenolic antioxidants which help reduce the risk of heart disease. Adding a handful of pecan nuts in your diet can help prevent strokes and coronary artery disease. To see how pecans can affect other areas of your life, such as weight loss, check out this blog post: Pecans are PACKED with Nutrition!

Good for Men’s Health

Listen up, boys: pecans are great for everyone’s health, but especially for men. They are loaded with beta-sitosterol, which is a plant steroid that may help relieve symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia, or an enlarged prostate.

Get the Right Butter

Ditch nut butters loaded with extra oils and sugars - they don’t do anything more for the butter and turn those healthy nuts into a not-so-healthy treat. When picking a nut butter, look for simple ingredients on the label. For example, Beardy Boys’ Pecan Smash is made with three ingredients: pecans, maple syrup and sea salt. You can’t get much better than that! When it comes to nut butters, less is more.

After reading all of that, I’m craving some pecans! Time to grab my jar of Beardy Boys, some fruit and snack away.
